A propos almost nothing, today I discovered Brandi Carlile’s lovely rendition of “Fairytale of New York” from last December.
Fairytale is among my favourite x-mas songs. The opening of Carlile’s version made me worry that she’d try to collapse the duet into a solo, but instead she has the whole ensemble join in— making it equal parts joyous, rambunctious, and delightful.
They take the problematic slur of a verse and replace it with the equally apt, “You suck, and I hate it.”
