P.D.M.: Philosopher

P.D. Magnus (philosophy home page)

In addition to loving wisdom, I am a philosopher by vocation. I am a professor at the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Much of my research is in the philosophy of science, motivated broadly by a falliblist but non-sceptical conception of scientific knowledge. I have written a lot on the underdetermination of theory by data and natural kinds, including Scientific Enquiry and Natural Kinds: From Planets to Mallards (2012). I've also written a bit on scientific realism and values in science.

I also write about the philosophy of art and music. My book A Philosophy of Cover Songs (2022) was published open access. Printed versions are available at a reasonable price, and an electronic version is available free to download or read on-line.

This website is a collection of documents and folderol from my philosophical career.
