Keith Payne, Laura Niemi, and John Doris coin them in writing about implicit bias <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-to-think-about-implicit-bias\/\">at Scientific American<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cardinality.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-460\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cardinality.png?resize=200%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"picture of a philosopher\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cardinality.png?w=200&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cardinality.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 85vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>the divining rod fallacy:<\/strong> On the basis of an instrument or scale for measurement being problematic, inferring that the property which it measures is not real. &#8220;[J]ust because a rod doesn&#8217;t find water doesn&#8217;t mean there&#8217;s no such thing as water.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>the palm reading fallacy:<\/strong> Expecting psychological or sociological phenomena which occur at the group level to yield predictions about particular group members. &#8220;[U]nlike palm readers, research psychologists aren&#8217;t usually in the business of telling you, as an individual, what your life holds in store.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should feel free to diagnose these fallacies in the arguments of your interlocutors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/pmagnus\/fallacies.html\">I&#8217;ve added them to my list<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Via Daily Nous, I encountered two new informal fallacies.
