{"id":2297,"date":"2026-09-30T14:17:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T18:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/?p=2297"},"modified":"2026-09-30T14:17:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T18:17:56","slug":"i-got-gettiered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2026\/09\/30\/i-got-gettiered\/","title":{"rendered":"I got Gettiered"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, I encountered a Gettier case in the wild.<span id='easy-footnote-1-2297' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2026\/09\/30\/i-got-gettiered\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-2297' title=' Edmund Gettier wrote a very short paper in 1963 arguing against the plausible idea that knowledge is justified true belief. He provides two cases where someone has a justified true belief which doesn&amp;#8217;t count as knowledge. His examples are somewhat contrived, but they suffice to make the point.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My wife and I were about to leave the house, but she couldn&#8217;t find her bifocals. So I helped her look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the desk in her office was a pair of glasses sitting on a handkerchief. So I said, &#8220;Found them! Your bifocals are on the desk.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, she said when she came into the room, the glasses I saw were the ones she wears when using the computer and not the bifocals that she wears when going out and about. As it happened, though, her bifocals were <em>under <\/em>the handkercheif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So her bifocals were on the desk, I believed that they were, and I had a reasonable justification for that belief\u2014 but I did not really <em>know<\/em>, because the glasses I had seen were not the bifocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voila!
