{"id":2151,"date":"2025-06-01T23:43:07","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T03:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/?p=2151"},"modified":"2025-06-01T23:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T03:43:07","slug":"a-falswiftiable-hypothesis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2025\/06\/01\/a-falswiftiable-hypothesis\/","title":{"rendered":"A falswiftiable hypothesis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not very often that philosophers make empirically testable predictions, but it&#8217;s happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/job\/paper.php?item=this_isnt_a_cover\">whether Taylor Swift&#8217;s rerecording of her songs are covers<\/a> of her earlier tracks, my coauthors and I asked what would happen if she were to acquire rights to her original recordings. We conjectured: She wouldn&#8217;t rerecord the remaining albums. We took this to show that her motive was commercial displacement of the original\u2014 a typical function for early covers, one that&#8217;s often cited to explain the etymology of the term itself (&#8220;covering over&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/taylor-swift-buys-original-album-recordings-1235351164\/\">Swift has bought the rights to her earlier records<\/a>. Recording was complete for the new version of her debut album. Those tracks may be released at some point, but a doppleganger album doesn&#8217;t have the same rationale it did before.
