The trend towards parrots continutes: <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2024\/08\/chatgpt-unexpectedly-began-speaking-in-a-users-cloned-voice-during-testing\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawErOTBleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHase0YwsJA15ANlb5OXfM7b0KhfJdRdj1cXgfd2S-9O4W6jVcFcrA6fImg_aem_gQDp5DNVxPDcPA0bGBRMtA\">Ars Technica<\/a> has a clip of a ChatGPT-4o test run where the bot, which has a canned voice it is supposed to use, replies in the user&#8217;s own voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OpenAI promises that the actual release version totally doesn&#8217;t do this.<span id='easy-footnote-1-2039' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2024\/08\/15\/parrot-progress\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-2039' title=' Open AI&amp;#8217;s solution is to run an additional algorithm on the output. If the separate check detects output that doesn&amp;#8217;t use the canned voice that they want it to use, the user never hears it.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/job\/paper.php?item=trusting_chatbots\">a forthcoming paper<\/a>, I argue that a big problem with text chatbots\u2014 what makes them engines of bullshit\u2014 is that they have no model of the world apart from their model of discourse. So they string together words based on words, with no further architecture connecting the structure of words to the structure of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ChatGPT-4o is multi-modal, meaning that it works in sounds and pictures as well as text. Instead of providing separate constraints on one another, however, all of those are just more data that the big network is trained on. It has no model of anything apart from its monolithic model of everything.
