{"id":2033,"date":"2024-08-07T21:08:36","date_gmt":"2024-08-08T01:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/?p=2033"},"modified":"2024-08-08T14:47:44","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T18:47:44","slug":"measuring-influence-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2024\/08\/07\/measuring-influence-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Measuring influence today"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/schwitzsplinters.blogspot.com\/2024\/08\/the-378-most-cited-contemporary-authors.html\">The Splintered Mind<\/a>, Eric Schwitzgebel updates his \u201crough measure of current influence in \u2026 \u2018mainstream Anglophone philosophy\u2019.\u201d The method is to count the number of distinct <em>Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy<\/em> articles in which the philosopher is cited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he ran the number five years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2019\/08\/20\/measuring-influence\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"855\">I defined the Putnam<\/a> as a unit of influence: By definition, 1 Putnam of influence means being cited in as many articles as Hilary Putnam.<span id='easy-footnote-1-2033' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2024\/08\/07\/measuring-influence-today\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-2033' title=' Putnam is not even the most cited author on Schwitzgebel&amp;#8217;s list. But Putnam was influential in many areas of philosophy, making him a good benchmark.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news: My influence has increased from 77 to 89 milliPutnams.<span id='easy-footnote-2-2033' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.fecundity.com\/nfw\/2024\/08\/07\/measuring-influence-today\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-2033' title=' An earlier version of this post had 100 milliPutnams. However, that was counting a couple of citations to papers in a volume I co-edited.
